| Cell Phone Service Providers |

One of the first things you need to do when you start your college life is to stay in touch, with you family, your friends back home and the new friends you make. Although all the dorm rooms provide a phone, you are only allowed to make local calls on them. You may recieve calls from anywere though. Getting a cell phone service is one of the top priorities for most incoming freshman. With this in mind we have compiled some of the options available to you. You must remember that if you do not have a social security number then you cannot get a post-paid plan with a phone in your own name unless you put down a refundable security deposit. This fee varies from service provider to service provider. In case you do not wish to put down a security deposit you may also purchase a prepaid SIM card from most service providers. You will need to present a valid ID, address and other such information. These SIM cards, upon recharging, are valid for up to one year(check with provider) and the currency can be conveniently bought and refilled online! Note: If you decide to bring your own cell phone from India, make sure its a tri-band or quad-band GSM phone supporting 850/1900 MHz. The United States only works on these two frequencies for GSM. 1. AT&T ( formerly Cingular) - AT&T offers a special discount to Drexel Students and is considered the best service provider in the United States. They have a store on 38th and Walnut where you can apply for a connection. You can also apply online. 3. T-mobile (Most mins per $) 4. Verizon - This is a CDMA service unlike the former three which are all GSM service providers. Check out the individual websites of these services for more details. |
